To calculate nutrition facts for a recipe, the following conditions must be met:
- You must be a Pro member,
- The recipe's serving size must be greater than zero
- The recipe's ingredient lines need to be linked up to the proper nutritional amount
Ingredient linking is done because we want to let people enter recipe ingredient lines in an unconstrained way -- for instance, one person's "scallions" are another person's "green onions," and we want to allow people to adjust ingredient lines to their liking.
To link the ingredient lines for a recipe, visit the recipe from a desktop web browser and sign in as a Pro member. You'll likely see some ingredient lines already linked (red dot next to the ingredient line) and perhaps some unlinked (white dot). Click on one of the white dots, select which ingredient you want (BigOven will guess it correctly in many cases), and specify how many grams are in that ingredient.
When all ingredient lines are red, the recipe is fully linked. Also, double-check that the "serving size" information is correct. If it's 0 or 1, you might get large calorie counts because BigOven will assume that one serving is the entire recipe. To change the "yield" number, edit the recipe by visiting the recipe page and clicking the "Edit" button on the right-hand side of the page. Our nutrition linking is continuously improving -- currently, about 70% of the ingredients are automatically recognized and linked if they are entered in a standard way. We are making additional improvements that you'll see over the next 18 months in the speed, accuracy and efficiency of automatic linking.
